Heat pumps are quickly becoming an essential feature in property development, but there are still many myths and misconceptions about their functionality. To clear the air, we sat down with Matt Townsend from Alto Energy, an expert in sustainable heating systems, who will be speaking at the Property Developer Show on 30th April in Bristol.
In our conversation, Matt tackled some of the biggest myths around heat pumps, shared key advice for property developers, and discussed the future of heating in the industry.

What’s the biggest myth about heat pumps?
One of the most common misconceptions about heat pumps is that they only work in new build properties. While it’s true that they’re ideal for modern, well-insulated homes, Matt explains that heat pumps can also be retrofitted into existing properties.
“Heat pumps are designed to operate at lower flow temperatures than traditional boilers, which makes them ideal for new builds with excellent insulation. However, they can absolutely be retrofitted into existing homes. When doing so, you need to consider heat loss and design the system carefully to ensure efficiency.”
What property developers need to know about heat pumps
With building regulations tightening and sustainability becoming a higher priority, Matt emphasises that developers need to prepare for the increasing use of heat pumps.
“It’s becoming harder to install fossil fuel boilers in new builds due to changing regulations. With the new Future Homes Standard coming into effect, developers will be required to install renewable energy systems, such as heat pumps. Understanding how to design and install them is crucial for the future of property development.”
Why Alto Energy stands out from other heat pump suppliers
Alto Energy differentiates itself from other suppliers by offering a complete service package that goes beyond just supplying products.
“At Alto Energy, we provide a full-service offering. In addition to supplying the heat pumps, we take care of the design phase, calculate the required radiator sizes, and ensure the system is properly calibrated and installed. We also offer comprehensive training for trades on-site, ongoing support, and warranties for peace of mind.”
By working with Alto Energy, developers can be assured that their projects will be efficiently managed, from design to installation, and even post-installation support.

When will heat pumps replace gas boilers completely?
With the tightening of building regulations and the shift towards renewable energy, the day when heat pumps fully replace gas boilers is fast approaching.
“The time heat pumps will completely replace gas boilers at least in new build properties is fast approaching. Building regulations are being tightened up all the time to ensure you have to put a certain blend of energy efficient renewable products into your property. With the Future Homes Standard coming into effect, we’re not far off the days where it will be no longer possible to put a gas boiler in your new build properties.”
By attending Matt’s talk at The Property Developer Show in Bristol on 30th April, property developers can gain invaluable knowledge about the future of heating systems and ensure they stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly changing industry.
